Until 1971, abortion was permitted in India under specific conditions. To ensure that abortions were as safe as possible and their adverse effects were not life-threatening, parliament approved the “Medical Termination and Pregnancy Act.”

If there is a medical reason for terminating a pregnancy, it can only be done legally.

Pregnant women who want to terminate their pregnancies with a surgical procedure are called surgical abortions. Procedures for surgical abortion vary according to how far along in the pregnancy the patient is. Pre and post-surgical abortion care includes a physical exam and lab testing, as well as counseling about what to anticipate, self-care instructions, symptoms that suggest you should call the doctor, and birth control plans.

Up to 20 weeks into a pregnancy, a woman can lawfully request a medical termination of her pregnancy. During the first trimester of pregnancy, termination of pregnancy is safer and less prone to difficulties than during the second trimester. Because sex determination has been outlawed by the Indian government, doing MTP after a fetus’s gender has been determined is also prohibited.
